Truth is
“Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again—
my Savior and my God!”
Psalm 43:5 NLT
As I sat down and thought about what to write I ran across this verse. I’ve read this verse many times in my life, and every time it spoke something different and new to me. I wasn’t sure what to write about, not because I didn’t have anything to say, but because every sentence that I tried to put together seemed to fall flat.
I have always enjoyed writing. It has been a source of therapy for me, and a way of escape. I love that I get to encourage, inspire, and motivate others with my words and in turn uplifts me. Here’s the thing though, the words that I write will always change because our thoughts are always changing. To prove that, just read through an old journal entry and see if you would use the same words to describe that experience the way you did then. As we grow, we evolve, and so do our thoughts. Thoughts eventually turn into opinions that we form over time. Everyone has an opinion, but that doesn’t mean it’s truth. Truth is important because it is a constant that doesn’t depend on emotions; and if I’m honest I can be quite an emotional person. Emotions are not the problem though, it is when we allow emotions to replace the truth, that it becomes a recipe for very high highs and extremely low lows. You’re probably thinking what any of this has to do with the bible verse above. Well, earlier today I found it difficult to write, because facing moments of discouragement make me feel like I cannot offer any hope. That’s when I realized, I didn’t need my words, I needed His word
Today I am reminded that my words and thoughts are not what give me hope, and they are certainly not what give you hope either. True hope comes from God and God alone. That’s why God’s word is so important. God’s word never changes and He never outgrows the thoughts He has about you. To make it even more simple, His word is what we know today as the Bible. It is a book that reveals to us the story of God’s love for humanity. I understand that for some, the Bible can be hard to understand and at times it can feel overwhelming to even open it. If you’re anything like me, you put it off until you feel “ready” for it, but truth is something you don’t have to get ready for, it’s something that your soul has been created for. So although I don’t have much to say, I want to encourage you to read something from the Bible today, even if that means just reading the verse above again. My words will always fail in comparison to what His word can provide for you. I promise you it will offer you more than anything I could ever write down or say because it isn’t just words, it is truth…it is life.
